How to Clean a PC and Its Fans with an Electric Air Duster
By the FRESMOL team · October 13, 2026

Why dust matters inside a PC
Dust blocks airflow, clogs filters and coats heatsinks. The result is higher temperatures and louder fans. Cleaning your PC every few months keeps it running quietly and helps it perform as designed.
Before you start
- Shut down the PC, switch off the power supply and unplug the power cable
- Move the PC to a well-ventilated space, because dust will fly
- Open the side panel and remove any dust filters
- Have a cordless air duster ready, charged and with the narrow nozzle fitted
Hold the fans still
Gently hold each fan blade in place with a small tool, such as a cotton swab or a pen cap, while you blow air through it. Free-spinning fans can over-spin and be damaged by strong airflow.
Pick the right speed
Start on speed 1 (50,000 RPM) around the motherboard and graphics card. Move to speed 2 (75,000 RPM) for heatsinks and filters, and use speed 3 (100,000 RPM) for the case floor and larger open areas.
Work from top to bottom
Clean the top of the case first, then the CPU cooler, memory, graphics card, power supply area and the bottom. This way dust falls down and you clean it last. Use the LED light to see into dark corners behind the drive cages.
Filters and vents
Take dust filters outside and blow them clean, or wash them if the manufacturer allows it. Clear the front intake and rear exhaust grills too. Clean filters help your fans pull in more air.
Put it back together
Make sure everything is dry and reconnected, replace the filters and side panel, and restart. Many users notice lower fan noise after a good clean.
How often to clean
Every three to six months is typical. Homes with pets, carpets or smokers may need it more often.
Do not forget
- Consoles and external drives
- Laptop vents (hold the laptop still and blow gently)
- Printers and routers
